Overview of Security Systems for Logistics and Distribution Enterprises

Bell can support you at any level; from a single sub-system need to provision and ongoing support of a full, integrated security system.
Whether at site, or enterprise, level, the aim for protection should be seamless security systems integration across all aspects of the operation. It is often useful to break-down the initial considerations and development of a systems-based approach into six areas. In sum these encompass the totality of protection requirements for the people and assets involved.

  • Bell Securitech : Logistics and DistributionPerimeter Security Management
  • Restricted Areas Security Management
  • Personal Attack Considerations – particularly gatehouses, goods in transit
  • Visitor Management
  • Monitoring/Tracking of the goods in/storage/despatch cycle
  • General or Specific CCTV Surveillance/Recording

Integration of Security Systems

Maximisation of integration of the sub-systems required to protect a premises is the key to successful security control. Various integration platforms provide differing levels of user-friendliness, intelligence and sub-system connectivity. They act as a common interface through which access control, CCTV, intruder and related sub-systems report and can be managed. This is the best way to optimise security effectiveness and productivity within the security management function. It also ensures that all resources are mobilised to their fullest when an incident occurs and archives the vital data necessary when post-incident investigations and follow-up audits are made. This can be valuable for other business purposes, health & safety, for example – in addition to the core security role.

The power and data-handling capacity of these integration tools, combined with the options available in today’s networked world, permits centralised monitoring and control not only of a single site, but also, where larger organisations require it, across multiple sites (including internationally). The ability to hand over the CCTV surveillance of an entire estate to a dedicated, remote monitoring centre outside business hours, for example, brings major efficiencies and can enhance rather than compromise security levels at these times. Systems usually exhibit greater vigilance and lower costs than traditional guarding services-based strategies.

Sub-systems: Core Options & Application Considerations

Access/Egress Control

  • Paper-based ‘disposable’ ID card reading systems – for occasional users/short-term visitors or contractors
  • (Smart)Card/proximity reading ID systems (biometric components for higher security areas) – for employees and regular visitors
  • Consider both security access and ‘audit access’ (time & attendance, cashless vending, PC-logon) requirements
  • Relevant supporting physical controls – barriers/turnstiles/rapid transit gates
  • Tagging systems for asset protection

Video Surveillance (CCTV)

  • Full-function cameras (PTZ) for general exterior approaches and interior uses
  • Static cameras with software enhancements eg for motion detection
  • Digital video recording – on- and off-site capabilities for response, audit and evidence

Intruder Sensors

  • Door contacts for entry to, and within, restricted areas/Fire exits
  • Perimeter detection systems – also used for sensitive areas within the premises
  • Personal Attack Systems – for reception, customer servers, cash handlers, guards
  • Anti-Masking Intruder Detection Devices – an ‘interior perimeter’ requirement
